Best Supporting Actor 2001

July 12, 2011
5. Ben Kingsley – Sexy Beast

Not very good performance in a not very good film. Kingsley is just overacting every minute, he´s on the screen. He plays a villain – a living cu*t – and he never plays it as a man, as a person, who lives. The film is shot from the Ray Liotta´s charater´s sight, so Ben Kingsley´s character is just bad. But if the film would be shot from Kingsley´s character´s sight, Ray Liotta´s character would be bad. Kingsley never realises this. Even a villain thinks, that what he does, is good. He would tell you the reason of his activities. But Kingsley doesn´t play it like that. In his hands his character is just overacted figure with no character…

4. Jon Voight – Ali
Jon Voight plays a reporter Howard Cossell. He doesn´t play it badly, but the film doesn´t even give him a chance to play something. He´s in the film, just because it´s based on a true story, but he actually doesn´t have a chance to show his talent. Most of the time, he´s on the screen, he´s just speaking, whats happening in the ring. His performance is a little bit dull, but it´s not his guilt. His character is dully written and so played, but Voight did the best, he could do…

3. Ethan Hawke – Training Day
I don´t actually understand, why is he supporting, but it doesn´t matter. His performance was very good, but he was a little bit overshadowed by Denzel Washington. Hawke´s acting is not really a character acting, he´s good in every situation, but not broadly. Training Day isn´t actually a film with some message or theme. It´s just well done action thriller, made because of money. And Hawke´s performance is great for this genre. But, unfortunately, nothing more…

2. Sir Ian McKellen – The Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring
Who wouldn´t know Sir Ian McKellen´s performance as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings? And who wouldn´t love it? He was great and the fact is, that he was the only Oscar-nominated actor from the whole trilogy for the role from the whole trilogy. And he was actually the only one deserving. As Gandalf he is authoritative and good old wizard and we can believe him, that he is. Great performance given by a great legend…

1. Jim Broadbent – Iris

Wonderful performance of a careful husband of Iris Murdoch. Jim Broadbent is one of the best actors and he proofs it in this film, too. He actually deserved a nominee even for his role in Moulin Rouge!, but it´s not important. His scenes with Judi Dench are just wonderful. They are quiet ordinary, bur still wonderful and that´s just because of them. This is actually a type of a film, in which great performances are very important. And, fortunately, Iris is full of them, Broadbent including. I just don´t understand, why is he supporting, but he´s excellent, anyway…
